Sites for Sore Eyes

Digital networks for health communications, both clinical and in relation to policy, can be highly extensive and evolved. Sexual and reproductive health resources are typical.

The World Health Organisation www.who.int, UNAIDS www.unaids.org and the UN Family Planning Association www.unfpa.org all provide country-specific data and numerous handy links. At www.who.int/rht/msm/msm_indicators.htm are maternal mortality data developed with UNICEF www.unicef.org and indicators for monitoring Reproductive Health.

At www.paho.org/english/sha/prflang.html the UNAIDS/WHO Working Group on Global HIV/AIDS and STD Surveillance with the Pan-American Health Organisation has epidemiological fact sheets by country and region. Demographic and health data seen on many sites are derived from the demographic and health surveys www.macroint.com/dhs while Country Health Statistics Reports with data from a range of sources can be found at the Center for International Health Information site www.cihi.com sponsored by USAID www.info.usaid.gov.

NGOs provide access to information on a range of controversial issues and access to training courses. Worth trying are John Snow International www.jsi.com, Marie Stopes International www.mariestopes.org.uk, Planned Parenthood Federation www.ippf.org, CARE www.care.org, Save The Children Fund www.savethechildren.org.uk/ and Medicins Sans Frontiers www.msf.org.

Research institutions are developing links to policy makers such as the DFID Health and Population Group www.dfid.gov.uk, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine www.lshtm.ac.uk/eph/cps/, the Population Council www.popcouncil.org, the Alan Guttmacher Institute www.agi-usa.org, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention www.cdc.gov, John Hopkins School of Public Health www.med.jhu.edu/wchpc/overview.htm and Columbia University Centre for Population and Family Health www.cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/sph/popfam.

Sites on general health include British Medical Journal _( www.bmj.com, The Lancet www.thelancet.com, American Journal of Public Health www.ajph.org Journal of the American Medical Association pubs.ama-assn.org, Global Health 2000 www.gh2000.com, World Bank Health Reform www.worldbank.org/healthreform/index.htm and Equinet at www.equinet.org.zw.

Other NGOs on Reproductive Health include Family Health International www.fhi.org, Pathfinder _www.pathfind.org, The Futures Group International www.tfgi.org, and International Women's Health Coalition at www.iwhc.org. Also see Global Reproductive Health Forum at www.hsph.harvard.edu/grhf/ .
