Sites for Sore Eyes

What type of information is available on the Internet about the emerging field of corporate social responsiblility? The currently limited research agenda means that the Net is a key resource for up-to-date material on this topic.

A wide array of sites covers all aspects of the debate, from company reports to NGO campaigns. Even so, the information is often unshaped and there is a need for more good sites dedicated to corporate responsibility. This brief guide flags some key web addresses. A useful starting point for any search is the CCINet, the 'Corporate Community Involvement' site www.charitynet.org/CCInet/index.html hosted by the Charities Aid Foundation.

This convenient 'one stop shop' provides links to corporate reports on their social activities, various organisations working independently on corporate responsibility, and ideas on best practice. Other relevant sites include:

  • www.tomorrow-web.com/network/rolodex.html a link to corporate environmental reports and contact details of other organisations
  • The SustainAbility website www.sustainability.co.uk includes an introduction to the triple bottom line agenda, and details of recent publications and articles from this cutting edge consultancy group.
  • A prominent source of academic and business thinking on corporate responsibility is Warwick's Corporate Citizenship Unit site at www.wbs.warwick.ac.uk/bpccu
  • The International Labour Organisation www.ilo.org is a self-selecting point of information on labour standards, and contains a search engine for specific topic areas.
  • The Ethical Trading Initiative site www.ethicaltrade.org offers briefings from recent seminars and details of upcoming events relating to labour standards and codes of conduct.
  • UK Social Investment Forum at www.arq.co.uk/ethicalbusiness/uksif/ is a good resource for ethical investment watchers, with a miscellany of event reports and article.
  • www.neweconomics.org/iu/iu-index.htm the New Economics Foundation site offers revealing insights into the state of the art of social auditing
  • www.globalnet.co.uk/~traidcraft/ - home page of Traidcraft. One part of the site rounds up social auditing benchmarks, another has a handy summary of fair trade principles and current campaigns to encourage big UK retail chains to sell ethical goods.
  • www.wri.org is the World Resources Institute site. An indispensable gateway to the US corporate scene, it also has blue-chip links to like-minded sites round the globe.
