Back to "Codes of conduct:
will they ever go far enough?"
What's that you're using? It's a primer, she answers under her
cotton mask. I turn to the manager and enquire what chemical she is
using. I know cotton masks concentrate and absorb solvents rather than
prevent their inhalation. I'm not sure, he says. I press him further. Is
it toxic? No. Would you drink it? No! Does she need to wear gloves? No,
I don't think so. Let's see the safety sheets for the primer, I suggest.
He shows me trade literature.
Looking through the storage facility, we find the tin of primer. It does
not carry safety warnings. Other containers are labelled in a variety of
languages, few of them in the local language. How is this manager to
assess the risks of chemical products without access to essential safety
information? More to the point, how is he meant to comply with the codes
of conduct of client businesses? |
