Readers' Comments:

Whereas the school environment provides an avenue for some teachers to indulge in sexual exploitation of innocent children, little efforts are being made to bridge the communication gap existing between male teachers in Northern Nigeria and their female students. We know little about their social undertakings because of sexual abuse phobia. How then can we assist?

Too many stereotypes of virginal girl victims and lecherous African men in this Insights! I agree that sexual abuse is a serious problem in Africa as much as anywhere else, and girls are a target more than boys. However, the way this story is told needs to interrogate the stereotypes rather than reinforce them. For example the quote: 'Boys want sex, girls want money'. Who said this, and in what context? How do people come to believe in or act out such stereotypes, in as far as they really do?
