A Dinka (mother tongue) class for grade one students in Majak Akon, Southern Sudan, an area that has seen 21 years of civil war. Millions have died, been abducted, recruited into militias, abused or separated from families. Now south Sudan's population will swell with people returning home, but the education system is under-resourced, depending on programmes run by aid agencies and faith groups. These difficult circumstances call for renewed attention to language issues as a way of meeting basic educational needs.
